Alcohol
When diabetes is correctly cared for a moderate consumption
of alcohol is permitted.
However alcohol could weaken the subject if he has already suffered
from neurological problems and produce secondary effect in those taking
oral hypoclycaemias.
It could provoke as well a sever hypoglycemia when drunk on an empty
stomach, especially with those under insulin.
Alcohol goes directly to the blood to be metabolized by the liver.
Normally
when the blood sugar level decreases, the liver uses its stock to produce
glucose. If there is alcohol, the liver stops regulating the glucose
level and concentrates only on the metabolizing and eliminating the
alcohol.
That's why alcohol contributes in the decrease of the blood sugar level.
Some other factors, combined with alcohol can also increase its effect
on the blood sugar level.
Physical exercise, for example, can lower the blood sugar level.
Careful, if we have an alcoholic
drink following exercise, there is a risk of reaching a very low blood
sugar level.
It is recommended to check blood sugar levels following a physical activity
and before having an alcoholic drink and to re-verify the blood sugar
level a few hours later.
Oral treatments and insulin also tend to lower blood sugar levels and
require certain precautions...
It is recommended that diabetics limit their consumption to 2 drinks
per day. It is advisable to avoid drinking on an empty stomach and to
drink slowly, during or after a meal.
If an alcoholic beverage is consumed before a meal, it should be accompanied
by foods like cheese or biscuits.
It is preferable to choose drinks with a low level of alcohol and sugar,
such as beer or wines with low alcoholic content.
Those under insulin do not need to make substitutions in their diet
when they have an alcoholic drink but those who don't should substitute
some food, generally those rich in fats and starches. OF
COURSE, all the above clarifications should also remind you that this
type of product, i.e. wines and spirits, should be consumed in moderation
and set aside for specially chosen moments.
